Case Study: Communication across Cultures

Google community | Befriending speech across cultures

The situation
Members of the Google community were communicating across cultures, roles, and emotional contexts.
The challenge was not confidence alone. It was how to speak in a way that felt respectful, clear, and purposeful when norms, expectations, and sensitivities differed.

Many were unsure what to adjust and what not to dilute.

What the work focused on
Two interactive workshops were delivered with a strong emphasis on awareness rather than scripts.

The sessions explored:

  • How culture and emotion shape how messages are received
  • How to organise language without over-polishing it
  • What to pay attention to when speaking in complex environments
  • How to remain considerate without becoming vague or passive

The idea of “befriending the speech” was central.
Instead of forcing a style, participants learned to understand their own patterns and adapt with intention.

How it was delivered

  • Two live workshops
  • Highly interactive and discussion-led
  • Practical tips and techniques that could be used immediately
  • Examples drawn from real cross-cultural situations

What shifted
Participants became more conscious of how their words landed.
They gained clarity on when to slow down, when to be direct, and when to explain context.
Communication felt more deliberate and grounded.

The workshops received a 4.5 out of 5 rating, reflecting strong engagement and relevance.
